One of my earliest memories of dancing was when I was five years old, and living with my grandparents in Wayne, Michigan. I liked to dress up in my grandmother's red calico petticoat; I looped the extra length around my waist and ran in front of the house near the road where the country tram car occasionally passed by. As it hove into sight I began my dance, and as the trolley merrily jangled its way toward town I twirled and whirled and finished by dramatically hurling myself into a fall, flat on the ground, pretending to be dead. Then I settled down on the edge of the dusty road to a pleasing little game of making mud pies and filling different colored bottles with water, until the arrival of my next audience on wheels, when the excitement renewed itself and I repeated my performance with undiminished enthusiasm
