Like a Dim Sum lunch, the Fifth International Dance Conference in Hong Kong brought together dancers, scholars, choreographers, and educators from the Pacific Rim, North and South America, Europe, India-indeed all over the world-in a marvelous mixture of dance philosophies, styles and techniques. As with Dim Sum, the quality of the individual items inevitably varied, but what counts is the cumulative effect. By that standard, this indeed proved a memorable feast. Previous international conferences in Hong Kong developed a format that emphasized the value of having many live performances alongside of scholarly papers and workshops. However, in the past, the conference lasted only one week and did not carry the burden of the imminent take-over of Hong Kong by China in 1997
