This essay is part of a broader book project: An anthropology of the elite that examines the political engagement of a family of performers in India, the Sarabhais. Here I engage with the work of Mrinalini Sarabhai and in greater detail with that of her daughter Mallika Sarabhai, specifically looking at her project of nonviolence through the arts. I consider her career and choreographic work, as well as her position in the State of Gujarat, where her political and moral choices put her in direct opposition to those of the government in power
