In 1962 the Martha Graham Dance Company visited Helsinki, Finland, where Graham's work had previously been little known, as part of the international cultural exchange program of the United States during the Cold War. This liaison of politics and dance created an unusual situation, in which political forces were at work in the introduction of a new dance style of the modern dance genre in Finland. The Finnish media gave the visit considerable publicity, and this analysis of the reception of the Graham Company shows how critics, influenced by a climate of receptivity to Western cultural ideas and a domestic critique of Finnish free dance as undeveloped—as well as by Graham's carefully planned publicity and promotional materials—responded to Graham as a legend of dance. They particularly valued the technical and expressive advances she brought to the genre of modern dance
