The practice-integrated study of 30 suburban runaways and 30 nonrunaways explored the extent to whcih particular stressful events and inadequate coping skills precipitate runaway episodes. The findings showed that certain types of stressful events combined with inadequate coping patterns led many youths to run away. Conversely, most nonrunaway youths were living in less conflict-ridden homes. Although the level of stress was lower for the comparison group, when stressful events did occur the nonrunaways reacted by exhibiting positive coping mechanisms
