The improvement of residential treatment programs requires a better understanding of unit management practices and their influences upon residents. The authors present a sixteen-item objective scale which measures resident management practices along a continuum from institutionally-oriented to individually-oriented. Assessments of the scale's reliability and validity support its usefulness as a tool for studying this important aspect of residential care
