A comparison is made of aggregated (county level) and disaggregated (household level) outdoor recreation participation models. The problems associated with each type of model for explaining household behavior are discussed using examples taken from the 1975—1980 Ohio State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. A summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the two types of models is made. Three general conclusions drawn are as follows: (1) at the present time we cannot successfully model outdoor recreation participation using disaggregated models; (2) the use of aggregate participation models may lead to incorrect conclusions about outdoor recreation behavior; and (3) much more emphasis must be given to developing better explanations of outdoor recreation behavior. Disaggregated participation models appear to have the greatest potential for future refinement
