The major areas of work in peace studies are outlined: critical demystifications, fiture peaceful conditions, and realized peacemaking processes. Then the major ideas of conflict resolution theory and practice are mapped out. The possible applications of conflict resolution ideas to peace studies are then examined in terms of the major stages of a conflict: its emergence, escalation, de‐escalation, and settlement. All this is done for each ofihe major sources of international conflict: domestic, international context, and the relationship between the adversaries. Finally, some of the value issues in using conflict resolution ideas in the study of peace are discussed
