The resurgence of the women's movement of the past two decades has had a major influence on the North American family. Although the divorce rate is now beginning to stabilize (Robbins, 1982), marital separation continues to be a major social phenomenon. With incrcasing career options for women as well as beginning societal sanctioning of autonomous strivings, increasing numbers of unhappily married women are opting to leave their marriages. Many of their husbands have a subjective sense of abandonment and are ill-prepared to cope with the "narcissistic injury" (Rice, 1977) that this type of separation entails. These men are the subject of this paper
