This article contains a review of research on parent-child contact after parental separation and divorce and provides a case study derived from a longitudinal study of divorce. This case study is based on a child psychiatric evaluation report of a girl aged five, on a face-to-face interview at age eleven and on autobiographical narratives of the same participant at the age of 22 years. The author advocates a “childhood research” approach aimed at improving the understanding of how children perceive, experience and cope with parental separation and divorce, especially custody and visiting issues. The article ties a critical analysis of the scientific literature and the case study to approaches and topics for future research
