This article describes Phase I and Phase II in the development of corporate work/family policies. During Phase I, some companies began to become aware of work/family issues and to investigate the needs of their employees. They began to implement a broad range of family-supportive policies. Phase II is characterized by an increase in the number and type of companies involved. Collaborative efforts and a greater government role are evident. In Phase II, the exemplary companies are moving in a new direction, emphasizing flexible time arrangements and a supportive company culture. They see a commitment to work/family as a business issue. The paper discusses the characteristics of companies with work/family programs, including size, type of business and workforce demographics. Finally, issues for the future are raised
