Despite its popularity in the Western world, Sun Tzu's The Art of War has rarely been correctly understood given its Chinese context and Taoist roots. As many of its hidden premises and abstract reserves are lost during translation, the article aims to recover the original meanings of some important concepts in The Art of War by elucidating them with the aid of strategic works more familiar to the West, including those of Clausewitz, Liddell-Hart, Boyd, and Wylie, and also by crossreferencing them to other classical Chinese strategic works
