In 1979 photographer Kathryn Nelson began a project to document the lives and art of Hispanic women folk artists of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. Los Testamentos is a thirty-five minute synchronized color slide and sound program which presents photographs and recorded oral histories of two women, Eppie Archuleta, a weaver, and Tiva Trujillo, a tapestry embroiderer. The sound track of the presentation is narrated by the women from edited interviews conducted by Nelson, excerpts of which-from Mrs. Archuleta-are included here. The women talk about their lives, philosophies, cultural traditions, their roles as women from young girls to grandmothers, and as artists, all through the context of their art. The slide show also discusses the characteristics of folk art, the conditions which foster it, and how the historical circumstances of the Hispanic people produced their own unique folk art traditions in the American Southwest
