A l'aide de la fiction et des livres de cuisine britanniques de la premiere moitie du 19 eme siecle, l'A. revele comment les aliments indiens, et specialement le curry, ont ete introduits dans le regime alimentaire anglais. Selon l'A., ce developpement culinaire sert de cle pour comprendre le travail ideologique accompli par la categorie de sexe dans la construction de l'Empire mais surtout pour comprendre comment les discours imperiaux de race, de nationalite, de classe et de sexualite ont aide a construire les points de vue domestiques du genre
