The juxtaposition of social expectations of behavior and the stereotyped masculine attributes of most sport participation generally cause conflict for the female athlete. Evidence of this conflict may and probably will arise early in the life of the female child who expresses or demonstrates an interest in athletics. She may encounter little opposition to her participation in a sport which is considered more feminine such as gymnastics or swimming, while meeting increasing amounts of social disapproval for participation in more masculine sports such as softball, volleyball, and basketball.
