Both as a native of Oil City, Pennsylvania, and as a teacher in the foundations of education, this writer has been puzzled for some time concerning a missing link that relates to the period of time that John Dewey taught in this particular community. The information hiatus suggests two sets of questions: (a) Of what particular significance was this period in his teaching career? Did it provide some fresh insights that made possible either clearer philosophical conceptions or more effective linkages between educational goals and practices? (b) Does there emerge something of an anatomy of decision or a framework of reorientation concern
