This article is written for those prospective and practicing teachers who are concerned about teacher traits preferred by high school students in the 1970s. It is neither our contention that teachers should strive to appeal to their students with qualities that please students nor that the teachers with desired attributes are necessarily more effective. (Although it is tempting to speculate that students might logically be expected to perform at higher levels for those teachers with the characteristics and behaviors deemed most desirable by students.) In short, the article is written to provide input to those who care about what students like or dislike about teachers. The article is in five parts: first, a description of the data source; second, a tabular report of findings; third, a series of tentative hypotheses; fourth, some telling quotations from students relative to desired teacher traits; and finally, a brief summary
