The idea of ’news as ideology ’ has been central to much recent mass communication research. This focus represents an attempt to tackle one aspect of the broader socio-logical question of ’how it comes about that one rather than another among conflicting definitions of reality can be &dquo;made to stick&dquo; within a society ’ (Goldthorpe, i97z: 360). Concern with the ideological character of news has been particularly evident in writings about industrial relations news, of which the Bad News study of the Glasgow University Media Group ( i 976) has attracted most attention. The authors conclude from their analysis of television news that industrial relations coverage is such as to discredit union activity in industrial disputes and to uphold assumptions about the economic and social order favourable to dominant class interests. Similar arguments appear in various articles in Beharrell and Philo (1977), and the general thesis has been foreshadowed in earlier more impressionistic discussions of the topic such as those to be found in 1B11111band (1969), Toynbee (1967) and Morley ( i 976).. All of this work has depended heavily on assessment of the content of industrial relations news and has involved the assumption that the way audience perceptions and values are shaped by attention to news can be inferred from news content.
