major institutions and shifted the political centre of gravity to the left. The French media, particularly radio and television, were not left untouched. Since then, government action, public debate and grassroots social intervention have changed the face of French media and especially their relationship to the State. Media-related events and phenomena have been in many ways the most telling symbols of the nature and quality of the changes France has undergone since May, 1981. The crowd that gathered at Paris ’ Place de la Bastille within moments of the announcement of the Mitterrand victory spontaneously began calling for the head of Jean-Pierre Elkabbach, France’s best-known television news commentator, a conservative journalist widely considered an agent of the Giscard regime. In the following days, dozens and then hundreds of groups set up pirate radios and occupied the public airwaves-and not their factories, as a more traditional conception of socialism might have led one to expect. Meanwhile, public sector media unions issued demands for immediate and drastic changes in newsroom personnel, operations and programming content
