The ascent of the Social Democrats to power in Germany will alter the country's direction toward a traditional Western alignment. The SPD platform on issues such as security and foreign policy is proof of this trend. Although not yet evident today, this “New Germany” is what the United States and other Western allies will have to face in the near future
