This special issue in Discourse Processes is in honor of the late Walter Kintsch. The interdisciplinary scope of his research had a tremendous impact across multiple fields, including discourse processes, psycholinguistics, cognitive science, and education, being cited tens of thousands of times. To honor his influence on the field and the numerous scientists who had been guided by his mentorship, this special issue includes 18 commentaries from his colleagues, former postdocs, and graduate students representing multiple generations of scholars. The contributing authors describe the impact of his work on the field of discourse processes from their academic perspectives and fields of study, and also share personal accounts of how Walter impacted their lives and careers. These commentaries are loosely organized in three partially overlapping themes related to how Walter's work influenced the fields of discourse processing and cognitive science, extensions beyond text comprehension, and real-world applications
