This study was designed to determine if 4‐year‐old children are able to demonstrate congruence within conversations with adults where the switch‐pause durations are varied by the adult over three separate conversations. Pour children served as subjects. A single‐subject experimental design with replication and counterbalancing was implemented. Three experimental conversations were conducted during which the adult varied the switch‐pause durations from 1 second to 3 seconds. The results indicated that the children demonstrated congruence for switch‐pause duration in the direction of the adult in all conversations. These data are discussed relative to open‐systems theory
