This paper deals with an overview of the ways in which language acquisition has been addressed over the last two decades from stimulus-response (S-R) to pragmatics and mother-child action dialogues as early as the postpartum period. Observations reported from studies on how adults talk to children are discussed as well as a review of some studies both cross-sectional and longitudinal on maternal speech to children which reveal meaningful statements about the relationship of maternal speech and the various states of the child's linguistic development.
