Since 1946, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been helping to increase the world's awareness of the plight of children and contributing to efforts aimed at the defense and survival of children facing dehumanizing situations. This paper discusses one of the United Nations' major initiatives in meeting these goals in the form of an international treaty on children's rights. Rights included in the treaty and outlined in the paper include the right to basic services (nutrition, health, education), the right to be protected against dangerous and exploitive conditions, and the right to participate in social and cultural life. Ratification of this treaty will be an important step in providing all those concerned with child welfare a firmer base from which to advocate the rights of children.
