Qurʾānic studies have moved between interest for Jewish background, emphasis the Arab social and economic situation and a theory which considers the Christian origin of the early Muslim movement. This review article discusses two authors, Angelika Neuwirth and Gabriel Said Reynolds, who give strong arguments for the latter perspective. The Christian context of the Qurʾān, however, does not involve an easy accommodation of early Islam to modern mainstream Christianity. Instead, it shows a distinct position for the Islamic movement as grown in debates with a plural and diverse Christianity
