It has been customary of late with literary critics to use the term ostensively, as though there exists between the term and what it indicates a non-problematic one-to-one relationship, i.e., a relationship governed by a perfect form-content coincidence. Such confident uses of the term seem to suggest a) that there is a Post-Modernist essence that precedes post-modern practice, and b) that the term is a transparent and selfeffacing signifier that adumbrates the Post-Modernist essence by way of its own lack of materiality. Given the juridical of such an essence, it appears that Post-Modernism is but another familial ramification of a transcendental Identity. The genius of the Tradition seems to have succeeded one more time in accommodating alterity within the vast apparatus of Identity. Such readings of PostModernism deny the reality, or even the possibility, of an epistemological break, and hence vindicate history as essential, theoretical, genetic, and dynastic. It is my purpose in this essay to repudiate these inadequate and insidious representations of the post-modern event and to demonstrate the poverty of representational epistemology in the context of a differential emergence. Consequently, it is also my intention to express postmodernism from its own perspective and, in so doing, disclose a) the reality of the break, and b) the inscription of hegemony in all
