Previous research has argued that private sphere concerns generally hold greater significance for women in politics than for men, although scholars have found that men are not insulated from private sphere considerations. What is less well understood is how men and women think about the trade-offs between public and private sphere obligations. Using Q-methodology, this research adds to this body of work by exploring the structure of thinking of public officials and by analyzing different patterns of public-private trade-offs and tensions. The analysis also highlights the role of economic roles as well as reproductive roles in shaping political career thinking. What emerges from this analysis is a fuller picture of the interrelationships between public and private than previously understood. The analysis suggests few public officials -male or female -seem to escape the dilemmas of the private sphere in making political career decisions
