The sources provide us with scarce information on the use of resources obtained by the Order of the Hospital from its possessions in the Crown of Castile during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. There is no doubt that this wealth was destined in the first place for the maintenance of all the facilities and members of the Order in Castile and Leon. What remained thereafter would be allocated to four different areas: Contributions to the central convent of the Hospital in the East; military activity within the Crown of Castile itself; coverage of welfare and specifically hospitaller functions; and support for certain financial operations
