Jean-Luc Lamboley, Tarente et les Messapiens. À propos de Strabon VI, 3, 4 (C 281), p. 523-533. Reprise de la notice de Strabon VI, 3, 4 : en situant l'épisode en 334-333 au moment où Alexandre le Molosse appelé par Tarente reprend Héraclée à la coallition lucano-messapienne, on peut conserver le texte de Strabon sans le corriger, et rendre compte de l'alliance daunio-peucète, sinon comme le fait de Tarente, du moins comme celui d'Alexandre. Ainsi cette notice s'intègre parfaitement au topos de l'auteur relatif à la décadence tarentine : il s'agit d'un ultime exemple où la nécessité d'une aide, non seulement étrangère, mais aussi «barbare» pour lutter contre d'autres barbares, illustre tout particulièrement cette déchéance
