Il contributo è dedicato ad un’analisi della presenza di divinità e culti italici nell’Eneide. In particolare, vengono esaminati i casi di divinità come Angitia, Feronia, Marica, Mefitis, Iuppiter Anxur, e il rituale degli Hirpi Sorani. Una serie di riflessioni sul poema virgiliano come repertorio di informazioni sull’Italia preromana porta all’annosa questione delle fonti dell’Eneide, e dunque al legame tra Virgilio e Varrone, e di qui al tema fatidico del rapporto tra il poema e il progetto culturale e politico augusteo. Tra le conclusioni, si ipotizza che in realtà il poeta non abbia esitato a modificare le informazioni storiche in suo possesso, utilizzando i riferimenti alle religioni italiche come mezzo per impreziosire la narrazione epica e per rendere al lettore un’immagine particolare dell’Italia al momento dell’arrivo di Enea
