As growing numbers of non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs) in the North seek collaboration with indigenous organizations in the South, the nature of relations between the two becomes an issue of increasing academic and practical concern. Research concerning the nature of existing relations between NGDOs in the North and the South reveals considerable divergence from the principles of “partnership” which have been articulated by the NGDO sector as guidelines for acceptable North-South NGDO relations. Recommendations for overcoming barriers to partnership include strengthening the organizational capacity of Southern NGDOs and improving constituency links.
