In an attempt to explore the prospects of Indonesia in the present decade and beyond, the author identifies some basic variables that are likely to shape developments in the archipel. Based on the structural demographic changes, the author proceeds to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the state, comparing centrifugal and integrative forces. Other challenges to be met by Indonesia in the future are discussed, such as the contradiction between accelerated growth and political stability, the emergence of new middle and working classes due to rapid industrialization, and the relationship between state and private capital. The related issues of Soeharto's succession and the country's democratization are reviewed with a focus on likely political scenarios. The author concludes with a brief analysis of external factors, arguing that a failure in globalization would increase Indonesia's integration to the Asian sphere, where she would gain NIC status anyway
