The " Pre-Chassey " of Fontbrégoua, Salernes (Var, France) is one of the groups attributed to an early, non Chassey, Middle Neolithic. On the basis ofl4C dating, it occurred around 4500 ВС (calibrated), i.e. contemporary with or just before the constitution of the "Southern Chassey ". This article presents the typological results of a hitherto unpublished study of the ceramic finds. Searching for comparisons reveals common aspects with some of the last southern Early Neolithic contexts or with the first Middle Neolithic groups, rather than with the Chassey Culture. That explains why the authors prefer to designate the series as "Pre-Chassey " rather than " Proto-Chassey ". Relations do exist with Italy, but are tenuous: some decorative modes seem to indicate ties with the Early Neolithic and initial phase of the Middle Neolithic ofLiguria. This preview fits with some of the conclusions of the study on the flint industry, which is distinct from both the Cardial and Chassey industries. The resulting chrono-cultural implications will be examined at the end of a specific study currently in progress, which aims at estimating the homogeneity of this ceramic series
