The aim of this paper is to present a possible solution to some of the problems related to tourism in developing countries. In Senegal, an alternative form of tourism called "Integrated Tourism", is being implemented. This formula tries to create an equal basis for real contacts between tourists and their hosts. Small scale lodgings built, managed and operated by local villagers offer minimal comforts to small numbers of tourists, who have to adapt to the local way of life, during their visit. Profits are used for the development of the infrastructure and to stimulate local economy. This paper presents the experiment and evaluates it in terms of its goals and achievements. Finally certain guidelines are suggested for developing countries that may be useful in their attempt to create and develop alternative tourism schemes
