Tourism's unprecedented expansion in the Alps has created tremendous social and environmental changes. The pace of development, externally induced environmental change, and structural problems, within the tourism industry itself have reached a point where new approaches incorporating sustainable development strategies and alternative tourism concepts are now receiving serious attention. This paper documents the evolution of these changes and then uses three examples from the Austrian and German Alps to illustrate a range of strategies being used to Contain tourism's growth
