The present study addresses a set of key questions arising from the direct observation of the relationship between literature and knowledge, considering that the Transylvanian space that generated Romanian literature may be ascribed to the wider context of the modern/colonial world system. The present discussion focuses on the analysis of two of Slavici’s less-known novels, and identifies within the narration hypostases of colonial discourse, the roots of modernity reflected by social evolution, aspects regarding work relations and the circuits of raw materials in Transylvania and the Principalities in the second half of the nineteenth century
