How does a traveller communicate and make connections with the local population in a place if she (the traveller) and they (the locals) do not speak the same language? How does the sharing of stories affect personal relationships, encourage meaningful encounters? What constitutes an ‘authentic’ experience in an unfamiliar place? In this creative non-fiction piece, I address these questions by recreating scenes and anecdotes from my own experiences during a brief stay in Prague. As a participant observer, I undertook typical daily activities such as having a drink in a local bar, taking walks in a blue-collar neighbourhood, and shopping for groceries, in an attempt to spend my time in Prague as something other than a tourist. And though I tried to learn the language of the place, I discovered that understanding specific words is not as important to making personal connections as understanding universal human behaviours and desires
