This paper tests the influence of socio-economic status on three indicators of leisure: holiday taking as a measure of actual leisure behaviour, and recreational aspirations and expectations as indicators of the activities people prefer. The findings show that people of different socio-economic status aspire to the same forms of leisure behaviour. There are, however, systematic and consistent differences related to socio-economic status in holiday taking and leisure expectations. These results suggest that inequalities in holiday taking arise from constraints relating to socio-economic status, particularly income, rather than unique leisure values. Several empirical generalizations are drawn from the findings and used as steps towards a theory of leisure determinants in Australia
