After a brief examination of the literature on leisure, identifying the divergence of ‘quality’ and ‘quantity’ approaches, the effects of industralization are discussed, particular attention being directed toward control and standardization. The emergence of the leisure industry in Australia is analysed in relation to its effect on the freedom of choice and variety. Finally, an assessment is made of the impact of industrialization on our societal values and conceptions of leisure
