Using a Who's Who‐type compilation, two thousand Italian‐Americans are studied, who worked in Boston in the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first four of the twentieth. Details are presented of Italian birthplaces, moves before reaching Boston, patterns of marriage, and size of family, occupations and the ways by which success was achieved, membership of associations, and people's image of themselves. Much of this reinforces the findings of other scholars, studying larger numbers or other cities; but far more personal detail emerges
