This article offers a discussion and transcription of a little‐known MS draft of John Hooker's parliamentary treatise The Order and usage how to keep a parliament in England in these days (c. 1571). This early draft differs significantly from the final printed version, indicating that the author worked hard to make improvements to the text. The article highlights the major differences between the draft and the final version, discussing them under four headings: expansions; improvements to the clarity or accuracy of phrasing; factual corrections; and sensitivity changes. The fact that Hooker revised the treatise so carefully affords further confidence in the value of his work as a source of information for how parliament worked in the late 16th century
