The purposes of this paper are: (1) to give an account of the 1983 attempt to close the University Department of Adult Education in Southampton; (2) to analyse both the local and the national circumstances pertaining at the time, in the previous decade and in the immediate aftermath; and (3) to suggest implications for the future in the light of ‘mainstreaming’1 and other changes initiated by the HEFC (Higher Education Funding Council) during 1993–95
