In Revisiting Austria, Gundolf Graml examines the degree to which tourist discourse facilitated the development of an Austrian normality after 1945 (p. 34). As the author reports, it is a result of both exhaustive research on pivotal questions concerning the Austrian national identity, and many journeys: ‘geographically, intellectually, and personally’ (p. xi). The book might be seen as a continuation of research that explores the phenomenon of Austrian tourism and its contribution to the development of a national identity, including books such as Die Urlaubsrepublik: die Zukunft des Tourismus in Österreich by Peter Zellmann and Sonja Mayrhofer (Manz, 2015), MedienKultur Tourismus: Transkulturelle Befunde über Weltbild und Lebenswelt, edited by Thomas Herdin and Franz Rest (Baden-Baden, 2018) and the first half of the analysis in Katarzyna Kapuscinska’s Nation Branding Österreichs. Eine Untersuchung der „Marke Österreich“ in Polen (Hamburg, 2017). The novelty of Graml’s book, however, stems from his interdisciplinary approach to the relations between tourism and national identity. It is also the first English-language monograph dedicated to this area of research.
