Max Weber, it seems, is more relevant than ever. At a moment when calls for postnational democracy at the beginning of the twenty-first century have to come to terms with the surprising persistence of the modern nation state, Weber’s emphasis on both political citizenship and the need for rule, or domination ( Herrschaft ) reflect the paradox that stands at the heart of modern democracy. Against this background, Joshua Derman’s study about the spread of Weber’s ideas between the 1920s and 1960s is a particularly welcome addition to current scholarship. It also has some shortcomings. Derman’s study stands in the tradition of Cambridge School intellectual history, at least as far as the broader theoretical background is concerned; its central task is to explain the curious and lasting influence of Weber’s political language and models on both sides of the Atlantic. The long-term success of Weber’s political language has much to do with the experience of modernity itself, and his intellectual development certainly reflects the political ambivalence of modern political thought as a whole, marked by the tension between nationalism, the demands of the administrative state, and democratic participation and constitutionalism
