In her book about Jews in hiding and escaping in Munich during the Third Reich and their lives in German postwar society, Susanna Schrafstetter offers many new facts and insights. Schrafstetter bases her multi-perspective approach on numerous sources, which enables her to achieve quite ambitious aims (p. 12). In eleven chronologically structured chapters she succeeds in documenting and analysing the conditions for living and surviving in the underground in the Munich area during the Nazi period. In particular she focuses on the strategies and options available to Jews and their supporters. Throughout the book she consistently compares her observations with previous research on Berlin, and she also refers from time to time to developments in other urban centres of the Reich such as Frankfurt, Cologne or Vienna (e.g. pp. 102, 110.). Her book is thus an important contribution to the history of persecution and annihilation far beyond the local context. Chapter 7 on regional, national and transnational escape routes and connections is particularly successful. The book is also to be applauded for examining survivor biographies after 1945 (often postulated, rarely fulfilled) and postwar relationships between those who survived in hiding and their supporters. Finally, Schrafstetter’s consideration of compensation practices, punishment of traitors and the appreciation of help illuminates the mentalities of (West) German postwar society.
