The precipitate fall of France, Europe's foremost military power, in May/June 1940 and its occupation by the agencies of the Third Reich is one of the big stories of recent European history. The uneasy relationship between the semi-autonomous Vichy state and the German occupiers adds to the complexity of these ‘dark years’ and has been the subject-matter of a series of fine narratives, told largely from the French perspective. In After the Fall, however, Thomas Laub focuses primarily on the strategies of the occupiers. Here a schism rapidly developed between the essentially technocratic approach of the army command, which assumed responsibility for security and the exploitation of France's economy, and the racialist agenda of the SS. Meanwhile, the German Foreign Office initially harboured hopes of a preliminary Franco–German accommodation, involving a significant relaxation of the armistice terms in return for German military bases in the Middle East and North Africa, but Hitler repudiated these efforts.
