In 1970, Exercise ALCORA, an open-ended but secret military partnership, was entered into by the Portuguese, Rhodesian and South African governments. Partly motivated by South African concerns about Portugal's military performance in Angola, ALCORA, despite its evident shortcomings, seemed to promise — to some influential Portuguese officers at least — a military victory against the white redoubt's common enemy: African nationalist movements and their international sponsors. An increased understanding of the military and intelligence links between these three countries, important in its own right, helps us also to understand the divisions within the Portuguese armed forces before, during, and after the April 1974 revolution, notably in relation to the African question
