An intense debate is taking place about the nature and location of teacher training. The debate is set against a background of acute teacher shortages, in some areas of the country and in some subjects, and the development of innovative training schemes such as those for articled and licensed teachers. This article reviews the nature of professional performance and identifies the kinds of training which prepare practitioners for it. It argues that discussion about the training of teachers can sometimes be parochial and that valuable insights may be learned from the experience of practitioner training in health and social work. Aspects of training in these two areas are discussed and some parallels drawn. A conclusion summarizes features of the effective development of teacher training programmes in the future
