There has been a veritable explosion of resources on globalization, which reflects widespread and rapidly growing interest in the subject. While offering a wealth of information and experiences, the amount of available material can be somewhat daunting for the uninitiated. An essential place to start, in beginning to sift through this literature, is to be clear about how globalization is defined. Judging by the scope of topics covered by existing resources, there has been a temptation to throw almost everything into the pot. This includes efforts to re-label many issues as ‘global’ where other terms (such as international) have proven perfectly adequate in the past. The health field has been equally guilty of this tendency which, in turn, leads to conceptual and empirical imprecision.
