In the first part of our study of painted pottery from the recent excavations ofthe Middle Helladic settlement of Aspis at Argos, we presented the Mattpainted Ware locally or imported from Aigina. In this second part we set out the preliminary results of the study of the Lustrous Decorated Ware, which is much rarer and was produced in a workshop situated most probably in the Southeastern Peloponnese. One of its chief characteristics is the similarities it bears to the Minoan pottery (MM IA-MM III/LM IA), similarities that are not only morphological, but technological, indicating that its centre of production was very familiar with the technical methods employed by the Minoan potters. Through a study of the physical characteristics of this pottery (specialised technology, limited répertoire of shapes, elaborate decoration) we consider its function (consumption of liquid foodstuffs) and social role (prestige vases), and we furdier attempt a better definition the features of its centre of production. Lasdy, through an examination of the variability of these two categories of painted ware, we make an attempt to illuminate the socio-political organisation of the settlement and the successive changes that have affected it : its restructuring at the beginning of the period of the Mycenaean shaft graves and its abandonment at the end of this period
